The first week of a course is often one of the busiest, as we are setting things up and starting the ball rolling. In the meantime, you are figuring out what’s what and we are all getting to know each other.
This course is no exception. You will find that, after a week or two, you will settle into a predictable routine and know what is expected of you. But for week one you do have a few additional tasks…
- Set up a blog. Make sure you have turned off comment moderation.
- Watch the first week’s lecture, and write a blog post (400-500 words) introducing yourself to the class, telling us your expectations for the course, and responding to the lecture. Include a question for discussion. Send me the address of your blog. Do this by Wednesday night (11:59pm, January 11),
- Comment on two of your classmates’ blog posts.
- Decide what grade you want for this course, and which texts you want to read (this guide should help you), and fill out a course contract (PDF) accordingly. This is due on January 19.
- Read Teresa de la Parra‘s Mama Blanca’s Memoirs, watch the associated lecture, and write a blog post (again, of 400-500 words) due by Monday, January 16 at 11:59pm.
- Come to class, prepared to participate.
Hey everyone, sorry for the late reply; I’m still getting used to the no canvas and got really confused for a second. My name is Bibiana (Bibi) Cortez; I’m in my third year studying psychology. I’m originally from Monterrey, Mexico but I moved to Vancouver 10 years ago with my family, so I can speak Spanish fluently, although sometimes my writing and spelling could be better. I love travelling, especially to Latin American countries and learning about traditions, customs, gastronomy, values, and lifestyles. I would say one of my favourite places I have been is Merida, Yucatan, which is a city rich in the history of the Mayans and Spanish cultures during the colonial era; it’s filled with ancient Mayan ruins, its safe, the food is fantastic, the people are the friendliest most kind people, so I recommend it to all of you.
I’m taking this course as my second literature requirement, and since I’m from Mexico, it would be a good opportunity to learn more about Latin American literature. While my family at home knows almost all these authors, I don’t know most of them, so I’m excited to learn about them and what influenced them to write their pieces. Therefore with this class, I hope to learn more and expand my knowledge of Latin American authors and their backgrounds since I think that has a lot to do with what they write. I’m excited to meet all of you!
My question would be, ” If you have travelled to a Latin American country, which one would you consider to be your favourite? and why?”
